GAINESVILLE, Fla – GlobeGators returns! We know we teased you with our single post from Honolulu nearly a year ago, followed by an interval of hermitlike domestic travel, but this time we really mean it. In less than a week, the blog leaves the freezing Swamp for a sunny location that recently made headlines. Can you guess our destination? Here are some clues:
-“A poor and dusty village in the 1960s … transformed into the quintessential metropolis of the future through the vision of clever sheikhs,” according to the city’s biographer.
- Recently opened the "Tallest Building in the World!" to much fanfare, then closed it just as abruptly
- Home to many of the world’s fastest thoroughbreds, like this Breeders Cup winner profiled by GlobeGators in 2008: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/search/content/local_news/epaper/2007/03/25/s1c_invasor_0325.html
- A massive building boom fueled by the real estate bubble stretched beyond even the beachfront, spawning manmade palm-shaped islands offshore and dotting the skyline with construction cranes.
To those of you who might think we are trying to throw you off by describing a trip to South Florida, rest assured that we would do no such thing. But the parallels are eerie.
